If we are unable to see the script for any reason then you will be notified in the Grow Publisher Portal that the Journey script is missing from your site:
Don’t be alarmed! There are a few troubleshooting steps we can take to see where the hang-up might be.
Step 1: Confirm that you’ve followed the steps to install
If we are unable to see the script for any reason, then you’ll be notified on the screen that the script is missing and to choose the best method for installing the script depending on if you are running on a WordPress site or a Non-WordPress site.
WordPress Sites
If you are on a WordPress site then we recommend installing the Grow for WordPress plugin which will insert the script with the simple click of a button.
Non-WordPress Sites
You can install the Mediavine Journey script on Non-WordPress sites by navigating to your Grow Publisher Portal and choosing to install the script manually:
This method requires that you install the code in the <head> section of your site. If you are unsure of how to accomplish this, please take a look at our help article How To Install the Journey Script on non-WordPress Sites.
Step 2: Clear Cache
Caching allows a site to load faster, but that doesn’t always include the most up-to-date version of your site. To ensure that you and your readers are seeing the most current version of your site, you’ll want to clear out your site’s cache.
Clear your cache(s) one at a time and then check in an incognito window after each to see if ads are displaying.
Caching Plugin - If you have a caching plugin installed, be sure to clear/purge your site’s cache within the plugin.
CDN - If you are using a CDN such as Cloudflare, be sure to clear the cache here as well.
Server-level caching - If you did not find success with clearing your caching plugin and clearing your CDN cache, you can reach out to your host to clear out any server-level caching.
Once you’ve cleared each cache and checked to see if ads are serving (in an incognito or private browsing window), navigate back to your Grow Publisher Portal to check again and see if the script is detected.
For more information on how to clear out your cache, check out our help article How To Clear Your Cache on WordPress Sites.
Step 3: Check for Script Optimizations
Optimization plugins and settings often minify ads script, which usually places the ads script inside another script. This can lead to the crawler that is looking to detect the script to skip over the script code, even if it was installed correctly.
If you are running any speed optimization or caching plugins, then we suggest making sure that you are excluding the Journey ads script from being optimized in any way.
Please take a look at our help document on How to Resolve Script Optimization Conflicts if you need help narrowing down optimization plugins and settings.
Step 4: Check any Security Plugins/Firewalls
Similar to the step above, security plugins and firewalls can prevent our crawler from accessing your site and can return a false negative when we are looking to detect the script.
Check to make sure that your security/firewall settings aren’t overly restrictive when it comes to crawlers/bots accessing your site.
Step 5: Check your Robots.txt
In rare cases, your robots.txt file can prevent crawlers from seeing your site. In this case, the script may be on your site, but our crawler is unable to access your site so it returns with a false negative.
Check to make sure that your robots.txt file isn’t being unnecessarily restrictive when it comes to blocking crawlers/bots from accessing your site.
