Your site should have a privacy policy on a dedicated page, that is also linked in the footer on your website. Advertisers require privacy policies and often check them, but they should also be easy for readers to find.
Specific privacy policy language is required in order to serve ads. We make adding that language to your existing privacy policy simple by inserting the correct language for Journey by Mediavine ads for you. In order for us to insert the correct language we need to be sure a few things are correct and are accessible.
- The link to your privacy policy must be typed correctly. Take care to double check for typos. This field will be pre-filled with your root domain and all you’ll need to add is whatever comes after the trailing slash.
- Our crawler needs to be able to access your site.
This step should be simple, but if you need additional information or get stuck, we have provided a few additional steps below to help you troubleshoot.
I’m Receiving an Error that my Link is Incorrect
The are three main reasons why our crawler would be unable to successfully inject the Privacy Policy text on your site:
- The link is typed incorrectly
- There is a security issue preventing our crawler from writing to your site
- Robots.txt
Make Sure the Link is Typed Correctly
The domain of your site is populated automatically, so you’ll only need to enter the directory URL to your Privacy Policy. What you enter in this field will largely depend on the domain structure you chose for the page.
To be sure that you have the exact correct information entered, go to the privacy policy page on your site and copy ONLY everything after the trailing slash, after your root domain.
Check any Security Plugins/Firewalls
Security plugins and firewalls can prevent our crawler from accessing your site and can sometimes return a false negative.
Take a look at your firewall settings to be sure they aren’t overly restrictive when it comes to crawlers/bots accessing your site.
Check your Robots.txt
In rare cases, your robots.txt file can prevent crawlers from seeing your site. In this case, the Privacy Policy may be on your site, but our crawler is unable to “see” it, so it returns with a false negative.
Check your robots.txt file to make sure that it is not being unnecessarily restrictive when it comes to blocking crawlers/bots from accessing your site. If you’re not sure how to do this, you may need to reach out to your host for help.
Make Sure the Link is on the Homepage
Your Privacy Policy should be linked from your homepage, and should be easily accessible from every page on your site. For this reason most people choose to link to it in the footer of the website. It can also live in your site’s main navigation.
